Deviated Septum – Signs and Symptoms

deviated septum

The thin wall between your nasal portions is moved to one side by a deviated septum. The nasal septum is off-center — or deviating — in many people, reducing one nasal passage.

A deviated nasal septum can lead to swelling of tissue lining the nose, or the two may cause a nasal blockage or blockade (obstruction).

Nasal obstruction treatment may include medicines for reducing swelling or nasal dilators to help open nasal passages. To correct a deviated septum, you will need nose septum surgery.

Causes

  • Birth condition - In some cases, during fetal growth, a deviated septum occurs and shows up after birth.

  • Nose Injury - The result of an injury that makes the nasal septum out of position can also cause a deviated septum. Such a wound can occur in infants during delivery. A wide range of accidents can lead to nose injury and an abnormal septum in children and adults. Nose trauma occurs most often in contact sports, harsh plays such as wrestling or car accidents.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Obstructed Nostrils - This obstruction may make it hard for the nose or nose to breathe. This could be seen more if a patient has a cold (high respiratory system infection) or allergies that can swell and narrow the nasal passages of the patient.

  • Sinus Infections and Nasal Congestion - An abnormal septum is common for sinus and post-nasal drip infections.

  • Nosebleed - The surface of the nasal septum of a patient may be dry and its risk of nosebleeds may increase.

  • Troubled Sleep - An abnormal septum and swelling of the intranasal tissues can adversely affect a patient's sleeping properties and cause chronic breathing to dry mouth.

Treatments

For people with mild symptoms, the local drugstore offers options for over-the-counter and prescription treatment.

It is recommended to appoint a consultation with an occurrence if you suffer from a severe nose obstruction, frequent bleeding or recurrent sinus infections or believe that they have a septum deviation. The surgeon may suggest a septoplasty procedure depending on the specific factors pertaining to each patient.

Septoplasty treatment or nose septum surgery is an operation to adjust the septum and restoration of a patient's breathing ability. While septoplasty procedures do not cause changes in the external appearance of the nose, for patients wanting to correct the interior alignment of the septum, septoplasty procedures are available while altering the nose's external esthetic appearance for facial harmony.
