How Sleep Apnea Is Connected to Diabetes?
A study said that extreme sleep apnea is a risk factor for the development of diabetic macular edema, a diabetes complication that can cause blindness.
A medical research team in the USA looked at the data from all patients treated at a hospital for the study over an eight-year period.
"Based on the results, we hope that more doctors will treat sleep apnea as a risk factor for diabetic macular edema," according to the researchers.
It is referred as ‘Diabetic Retinopathy' that can be a vital cause of sleep apnea. The researchers said that diabetic macular edema is harder to treat in patients with severe sleep apnea. You may need sleep apnea treatment at every early stage so that it does not lead to diabetes macular edema.
When diabetics have poor control over blood sugar levels, it can damage small blood vessels at the back of the eye.
Often tiny bulges are leaking fluid and blood into the retina from the blood vessels. In a region of the eye, swelling or edema may occur.
Sleep apnea, according to researchers, can contribute to the development and worsening of Diabetic Retinopathy through increased insulin resistance, increased inflammation, and increased blood pressure, all of which can damage the back of the eye's blood vessels.
Among patients with diabetic macular edema, severe sleep apnea can be a reason behind it.
Among patients who needed additional care to manage their macular edema, extreme sleep apnea is also more prevalent.
The research was discussed at the U.S. American Academy of Ophthalmology's 123rd Annual Meeting. It has been found that sleep apnea has become one of the major diseases that can cause a lot of problems if not treated at the right time.
