She saw several instances of total recovery from stuttering with infants, but was uncertain if the results were due to 'growth from' or greater trust. Dr. Merlo identified a variety of symptoms of sleep deficiencies, to try to identify the reasons for the association with stuttering:

Sleeping for children from pre-school, 10-11 hours for school children and eight hours for adolescents and adults.

• Sleeping fewer hours than is necessary. She recommends 14 hours of sleep for pre-school children, 10-11 hours of sleep for the school kids and eight for the teenagers and the adults.

  • For instance, sleep out of phase, go to bed later or sleep on the weekends.

  • Irregular patterns of sleep, which affect shift workers in particular.

  • Take a long time to sleep or get up for many night periods.

  • Sleep disrupted due to issues with hygiene.

Early Brain Damage Related to Sleep and Stuttering Issues

A study by researchers at California University looked deeper into the brain for associations with sleep apnea-related stuttering. Two groups of brains, one with stuttering problems, and one with no problems, were compared by the MRI scanning group.

The scientific researchers found that brain areas associated with speech output in the stuttering community were smaller. Brain damage and the severity of stuttering is linked to brain injury. They also found that 38% of the patients have had childhood stuttering.
